Introduction: About Rachelle!

Hello!
My name is Rachelle Ward. Good luck trying to pronounce that. I am a senior in the Health and Exercise Science program at the University of Oklahoma. My favorite season is summer because I love to be by the pool, go to the beach, and play golf. "The worst day on the golf course is better than the best day at work/school." However, I absolutely love fall in Oklahoma. OU football is one of my obsessions. Sometimes I can be too serious about it. I am a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda on campus. It is an academic club. I really enjoy school for some reason. This semester I am taking Principles of Health and Exercise, Chronic Disease Intervention, Spanish, and Women and Gender Studies. I could be considered a feminist :) I am also a pre-med student. I am basically still undecided on that though. I love the idea of the job, but I am not sure it has enough of a family vs. job balance that I am looking for. That being said, I love my family. I would do anything for them. Loyalty describes my family to a T. I cannot stand to read. I only do it when I have to like for school. However, my favorite movies are anything with Kevin Hart in it. Lastly, I have a Corgi named Carmi. She is my best friend. I have turned into a home body because I love being around her. Our favorite activity is playing fetch. She could play nonstop for hours. Being that corgis are herding dogs she may bite your ankles, or even your booty! But I have been trying to make her not do that since she was 6 weeks. It's been a process. She is just so cute. Only the lucky ones get to meet her.

I am a believer of God so to close: "Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8

A picture of Carmi I got when I was doing homework and she got on my table! I guess she thought I wasn't paying enough attention to her.

  1. Rachelle,

I also included a picture of one of my dogs in my introduction! I am a huge dog lover as well. I can not say I'm very good at golf, but I did play for my high school's team. It's an awesome sport. I love to go to the beach too, so I can say that summer is one of my favorite seasons (maybe followed by Fall). One day, I would even love to live by the beach. Good luck in the future and deciding on whether you want to go pre-med or not!

  2. Hey Rachelle! I can completely relate to your quote about golf! I love getting to play! I hope this spring I can get sometime off from work and go play! I actually have a Spanish minor! I loved taking Spanish! I hope to one day visit every Spanish speaking country! I love dogs too! I can't wait to graduate and get a puppy and train it to hunt!

  3. Rachelle, first off, Corgis are my favorite! I am so jealous that you have one. And she is really cute. Also, I noticed that you are in Phi Lamb. I have a few friends that are affiliated, so i'm sure we have a few mutual contacts. I hope your senior year is going well, and that you go out with a bang!

  4. Oh, your Corgi is such a cutie, Rachelle! I should make a pet gallery at Pinterest or something where we can all share pictures of the creatures in our lives. They are so much fun... and even when school gets all crazy and life gets really hectic, the animals know what's important: PLAYING FETCH! Anyway, I hope you will enjoy this class, and I bet you will find a lot of good connections with your Women and Gender class. The epics as we have them were composed pretty much by men for men... but they could not erase the women characters, so there are so many amazing women characters to ponder and think about, trying to figure out just what their story might be if they were not trapped inside these epic traditions. I'm always really glad when people choose women-centered projects for this class: it is a perfect counter-balance to the male-dominated epics... and the women's stories are always such a pleasure to read for their own sake. So, that might be something you want to ponder as you think about your own project for this class... and I hope you will enjoy it! :-)

  5. Hi Rachelle! We have a lot in common! My name is Marielle, and it is impossible to get people to same my name correctly as well. I think it is awesome that you are taking some Women's and Gender studies classes. I have taken numerous gender studies classes here at OU and I also like to think of myself as a feminist in training. :) More than just attaching the label feminist to myself I am interpreting the world in a different way and learning how to lift my fellow women up in the world and help my entire gender overall. Anyways, I hope you enjoy those classes as much as I did. Good luck this semester!

  6. Hi Rachelle! Even though I like colder weather, I am wishing that it was summer or fall right now because this cold weather is killing me. Like you, I’m also very loyal to my family. I have a six year old niece who is like my little sister and I don’t want to miss a moment of her growing up. However, by doing that, I’m torn between family life and other opportunities. So, I understand the struggle.

  7. Hi Rachelle! I am also taking a Women and Gender Studies course this semester, it is Women's Psychosocial Development. I am hoping it will be beneficial in my line of work. I can completely understand the apprehension of wanting to work in the medical field because it may take time away from family. I have worked in healthcare for almost 5 years now, and will begin my first job as a RN in March. I am also married with two kiddos. Working long 12 hour days does take away some time from my family, but it also a time that is spent doing something that I love. I think that if you find a specialty that you are truly passionate about then you will easily find balance between your work and your family. Good luck with your studies this semester!

  8. Hello Rachelle! Fall in Oklahoma is one of my favorite things as well--I love every part of it. I love the atmosphere around game day, the weather, the trees, campus life--it's all just great! I'll miss that whenever I graduate in May...I hope you enjoy your women and gender studies course. I took a few of those courses at OU, and I loved them! I thought they were great courses, and they made me feel more empowered as a woman. I also love Kevin Hart--I think he is hilarious, and I'm glad that he is appearing in more and more movies lately! Also, your corgi is the absolute cutest! I've always wanted a corgi because they are my favorite dogs! Very cute!

  9. Rachelle, you should totally become a Physician Assistant (P.A.). That's what I wanted to be for the longest time because it combines being a doctor with having a life. You are able to study your love of medicine, while also leaving time to have a family. Also, I too take OU football too seriously sometimes. I have a feeling at we would get along way too well! Good luck the rest of this semester!

  10. HI, Rachelle! I am also a senior with Health and Science as my major. I took Chronic Disease Intervention last semester with Dr. Taylor. I absolutely loved that course. I am a Pre-Nursing/ Pre-PA student and I feel like this class gave me a good generic background on what I need to know about major chronic illnesses, the diagnosis and intervention. One tip to do well in this class, keep up with your lecture notes. The information piles up really quickly if you wait until few days before the test to study. I strongly suggest going to the professor and looking at the quizzes. There will be a lot of questions on the test from the quizzes.
We seem to have a lot in common. I am from India so, I grew up in warm climate. I absolutely hate the cold weather. You must've enjoyed the warm weekend!
Good luck with all your classes this semester!

  11. Hey Rachelle I'm Anthony,
I think that fall is also the best season at OU. Football and good weather makes the perfect time to go to school. I can't stand the spring semester ha ha. What kind of job do you have just curios? I bet you are anxious now that you are about to graduate! I hope everything goes well for you .

  12. Hello Rachelle! I am also a senior too ! hopefully we will graduate soon! I am also taking a women's gender studies class. which one are you taking? I am currently taking the Women's psychosocial development I hope you can find a job path which can offer you time for family too! Your dog is the cutest thing I've ever seen. Good luck with everything you do!

  13. Hi Rachelle! Any ideas of what you want to do with your degree? I totally understand your love for summer. If I could I wish we could skip winter all together…except for the whole not getting snow day thing. I loved that you mentioned your family and loyalty. The support you receive from family will never waiver and I truly believe that. Carmi is such a cutie….I can’t blame you for wanting to spend all your free time with her.

  14. First off, I am so jealous that you have a corgi! I have always wanted one, and I am thinking of getting one when I move to graduate school. Also, I agree that summer is an amazing time, especially when it can be spent by the pool. I am sure that being pre-med means that you are always very busy, and that you will be after college as well. With that, I can see exactly what you’re talking about when you say that it may not have the right balance that you are looking for. I wish you good luck in your last year here at OU, and I wish you luck in your future endeavors!

  15. Hi Rachelle!

Carmi is super cute. I am in love with animals and dogs especially. Sounds like she just likes to give some love nips.
Summer is my favorite season too! I am such a warm weather girl…except Oklahoma summers aren’t necessarily my favorite (originally from Colorado where the heat is a little more dry). I think the sun just makes me want to go outside and do things. Be an explorer.

Can’t wait to blog with you some more!

  16. Rachelle,

that is a beautiful name - I am pronouncing it in my head pretty easily, but I could be pronouncing it wrong. Don't worry - people mispronounce my last name all the time! Haha. You have a wonderful attitude and a lot of great passions. I've never gotten into golf but I know a lot of people who really enjoy it, for the competition and entertainment.

If you have another semester here, you should take a class with Dr. Katie Schumaker! I took a Gender and the Constitution class with her last semester and it was hands down the best class I have ever taken at OU. I suppose it was the awakening of my "feminist" side (although for reasons I won't get into, the I dislike the term). Anyways, it was an excellent class and I really enjoyed it.

Carmi looks like she like to have a lot of fun! I've been wanting a dog for so long but can't seem to spend enough time at home for me to feel like I can handle one. How do you deal with being away a lot? Did it make training her difficult? My job has me traveling a lot so I probably won't be able to get one for another year or two, but I can't wait until I can!

  17. Hi Rachelle!
Carmi is a really cute and unique name and so is Rachelle. I guess you two have that in common. If I had a pet here at OU I would probably be a homebody too, I don't feel like I could bear to leave them alone for very long. Good luck with the rest of the semester and enjoy your senior year :)

  18. Hello! I totally relate to your love of summer. I’m definitely ready for this cold weather to end. Where do you like to swim? I always miss going to the beach since Oklahoma is so landlocked. Your dog is absolutely adorable! My brother-in-law has a corgi named Remy and she is precious! The fur on her paws are white, so it looks like she wears socks. It’s so adorable. I hope you have a great semester, and best of luck on your studies!

  19. Hey Rachelle!
It’s so nice to meet you! I do have to say that your little corgi is absolutely adorable. That one picture alone has so much personality. I can only imagine how much fun it is to have her around.
Summer is definitely the best season. Going outside and almost dying of heat stroke is so worth it when you have fun things to do, like golf! Good luck with your semester!

  20. Hi Rachelle!
Your dog is so adorable! I have some friends that are Health and Exercise Science majors that are graduating this year also! I love that family is so important to you. Family is very important to me, as well. I hope that your last semester is going very well and that if you decide to pursue medical school that it goes well for you!

  22. Hey Rachelle! First of all, your little Corgi is the cutest and most adorable pup I have seen!!! I can understand why you would be undecided with pre-med and HES, it is a tough field. Family is a huge factor in a lot of decisions, but keep in mind to do what you makes you happy. So happy that the weather is getting so much nice, it reminds me how close SUMMER is! Anyways, I hope you all the success in your future endeavors!

  23. Hi Rachelle! Your Corgi looks awesome! I'm a huge dog person! I definitely prefer big dogs, but your dog looks super fun and loving. Its incredible that your family is so important and close to you. My family has recently started growing really close together and it's an amazing thing. You are very lucky to have that! Good luck with your last semester and your future career. I'm sure you will do great in whatever you end up choosing!

  24. Hello Rachelle,

It's awesome that you enjoy school so much; it's a shame to go to school for 4+ years and NOT enjoy it! I am also an Honor Society member, but I am Phi Kappa Phi :) It's funny how when you enjoy learning, you tend to be good at it as well ;)

I can also relate to you on family: they are my # 1 priority. I refuse to move anywhere else that I am not less than 3 hours away from them, because they are more important to me than anything else. Family bonds can be so incredibly strong, and we are fortunate to have families that are so close!

Carmi is adorable, and I LOVE (pun intended) the Bible verse you included. That one is not quoted enough!

  25. Hey there!
Congrats on being so close to graduating! I will be graduating in December, and I am already super excited! I am also a feminist, by the way! I used to have a corgi too, and she was by far the best dog I have ever had! I understand what you mean about balancing job versus family; I chose to go into teaching English abroad in order to balance my future career goals and my own goals for my family.

  26. Rachelle,

You’re also an HES major?? I never thought I’d find another HESer here in Indian Epics ha ha! I’m also in SAL; however, I have only attended one meeting – I know, that’s bad. I’m also in Chronic Disease Intervention!!! Wow. Wasn’t that test earlier this week tough? (Pshew – glad that one is done with). And to close, I also love Kevin Hart.

  27. Hey Rachelle! What a cute dog you have! Corgis are like one of the cutest dogs and they're pretty fast even when they have those stubby legs. You're a pre-med student? That is pretty cool. My friend is in med school right now and he loves it. It's a lot of hard work but so worth it in the end. Kevin Hart is one of my favorite comedians. He is hilarious!
